THE OTHER END OF THE THREAD

Cultural Film | 2020

Directed by: Hamsa Mansour & Nour El Din

Cinematography by: Nour El Din & Hamsa Mansour

During the Covid-19 pandemic and as a nation-wide curfew was imposed to fight the spread of the virus, Cairenes took flying kites as a hobby to combat boredom. Every evening, right before sunset, hundreds of people would gather on bridges to fly their kites, resulting in a sky full of kites in different colors and sizes, flying over the Nile.

The sight piqued our curiosity to find the other end of the thread and to talk with one of the artisans making the kites in the district of Imbaba, Cairo.

*This film was produced before the Government’s crackdown on kite-flyers, prohibiting the act because of an alleged increase in accidents on the roads.

**Filmed in collaboration with GYPTIAN
